My Son Sanctuary
You’ll leave early, before the heat sets in, the road winding through rice fields and small villages until the hills close in around a valley that’s been sacred for more than a thousand years. A French army patrol stumbled upon the ruins here in 1885, overgrown and half-swallowed by jungle. What they found was the last great reminder of the Cham civilization, a kingdom that ruled much of central Vietnam for over a millennium before almost disappearing from history.
Every Cham king once came to this valley to be crowned, bathed in holy water by Hindu priests before taking the throne, with temples dedicated to Shiva rising around him. Look closely at the towers and you’ll notice something unusual: most were built to face the morning sun, yet several now point slightly towards the southeast. Geologists eventually discovered why, fault lines beneath the valley slowly shifting the ground over centuries, gently rotating entire groups of temples.
Nobody fully understands how the Cham built them either. Red bricks were stacked so precisely that no visible mortar can be found, while carvings of dancers, deities, and sacred animals remain remarkably sharp after thirteen centuries of rain and war.
Best for: history lovers and anyone drawn to places that still feel a little unexplained.
Best time: early morning, before the light turns harsh and the tour buses arrive.
Duration: approximately half a day, including the drive.
Good to know: wear comfortable shoes for uneven ground, and dress modestly if you plan to enter the sanctuary’s inner areas.
