Ninh Binh

The road south from Hanoi gradually slows. The city gives way to villages, then rice fields, and before long the first limestone peaks begin to appear on the horizon.

Ninh Binh doesn’t reveal itself all at once. It unfolds gently.

Towering karsts rise unexpectedly from the paddies, their sheer cliffs softened by greenery and mist. There is something timeless about the landscape, as though it has changed very little for centuries.

Most journeys begin in Tam Coc. At the small riverside dock, wooden sampans wait quietly by the water’s edge. The rowers, many of them local women, guide their boats with remarkable ease, sometimes using only their feet.

As the boat slips onto the river, the world seems to slow.

The water winds through rice fields and beneath dramatic limestone cliffs. In late spring, the paddies turn a brilliant gold, while in autumn they return to a vivid green. Depending on the season, the river reflects either the colours of the harvest or the soft grey of passing clouds.

The route passes through a series of caves, each one momentarily dimming the light before opening once again onto broad valleys and towering peaks. The sound of the paddles against the water echoes softly beneath the stone.

Back on land, lunch is best kept simple. Ninh Binh’s local goat dishes and crispy com chay are regional favourites, often enjoyed in small family-run restaurants overlooking the countryside.

Beyond Tam Coc, the region rewards those willing to linger a little longer. Quiet cycling paths lead through villages and rice paddies, while the waterways of Trang An and Van Long offer an even more peaceful side of the landscape, where birdsong often replaces conversation.

History is never far away. Hoa Lu, Vietnam’s ancient capital, still holds traces of its imperial past, while the forests of Cuc Phuong National Park shelter some of the country’s oldest trees and richest wildlife.

For one final view, climb the stone steps of Mua Cave in the late afternoon. The ascent is steep, but from the summit the entire valley unfolds below rivers winding through fields, limestone peaks rising from the plains and, on clear days, a horizon that seems to stretch forever.

Many travellers visit Ninh Binh as a day trip from Hanoi. Yet those who stay the night experience something entirely different. As evening falls, the day-trippers leave, the roads grow quiet and a soft mist settles between the karsts.

It is then that Ninh Binh feels at its most enchanting peaceful, unhurried and deeply connected to the landscape that surrounds it.

When to Visit

Best time to go: May-June, when the rice is golden or September-October, when it’s green and the air is cooler.

From Hanoi: about 2 hours by car or take the train to Ninh Binh station and grab a taxi from there.

Good to know: wear shoes you don’t mind getting wet, bring a hat. The caves are colder than you’d expect pack something light for your shoulders.
