Con Dao

The plane banks low over water so clear you can see the reef shadow beneath it. For a second the island looks empty, silent in a way that feels deliberate rather than simply remote.

Con Dao sits far enough off the mainland that getting here still takes a little effort, and that distance has protected it in a way few places in Vietnam have been. No high-rises. No endless rows of beach clubs. Just forest running down to empty beaches, and a small town content to stay exactly as it is.

For more than a century, this was one of Vietnam’s most feared prison islands. The old complex still stands, the infamous Tiger Cages among the country’s most sobering historical sites. Among the thousands imprisoned here was Vo Thi Sau, one of Vietnam’s most revered heroines, executed in 1952 while still in her teens. She refused a blindfold and is said to have walked to her death singing. Whether remembered as history or something closer to a guardian spirit, her presence is still deeply felt on the island.

She lies at Hang Duong Cemetery, her grave never without flowers or incense. Visit at night and you’ll find people speaking softly, leaving offerings, asking for blessings. It doesn’t feel like sightseeing. It feels older than that.

Away from the history, the island turns into something closer to paradise. Dam Trau Beach curves between two headlands, sand pale enough to look artificial, water clear enough to see your feet from standing depth. The waters here are among the cleanest in Vietnam, coral reefs largely intact, and from May to October, green sea turtles come ashore on nearby Bay Canh Island to lay their eggs, rangers guiding small groups onto the sand after dark.

Food is simple, mostly whatever came out of the sea that day. Nothing elaborate. Nobody’s trying to impress you.

Con Dao is beautiful because of what it has managed to keep, the reefs, the turtles, and a quiet respect for its history that never quite fades.

Best time to go: March to September for calmer seas and great diving. Turtle season runs May to October.

Getting there: direct flights from Ho Chi Minh City take about 45 minutes.

Good to know: much of the island is protected as a national park, and development is deliberately limited, book accommodation ahead in high season.
