You’ll begin on the north bank of the Perfume River, entering the vast moated Citadel built by Emperor Gia Long in 1804. Behind its thick stone walls lies the Imperial City and the Forbidden Purple City, once reserved exclusively for the emperor, his family, and the royal court. Although much of the complex was destroyed during the 1968 Tet Offensive, careful restoration has gradually brought this former seat of power back to life.

From here, the journey drifts into the countryside, where the Nguyen emperors chose landscapes as thoughtfully as they designed their tombs. These were never intended as places of burial alone, but as private retreats for reflection. Hue is home to seven royal tombs, each shaped by Feng Shui and reflecting the character of the ruler it commemorates.

Gia Long’s Tomb feels the most elemental, set among pine-covered hills and quiet lakes. Minh Mang’s Tomb is poised and symmetrical, its courtyards and lotus ponds unfolding with measured balance. Thieu Tri’s Tomb remains understated, opening gently into the surrounding landscape, while Tu Duc’s Tomb feels almost poetic, more a lakeside retreat than a mausoleum, still marked by the mystery of the emperor’s true resting place. Dong Khanh’s Tomb captures a moment of transition, where traditional forms meet European detail, whereas Duc Duc’s Tomb is notably restrained. In contrast, Khai Dinh’s Tomb rises dramatically on a hillside, its interiors richly adorned with intricate mosaics where Eastern and Western influences meet.

Taken together, the Imperial City and royal tombs offer a quieter, more reflective understanding of Vietnam’s last dynasty, one shaped as much by landscape and philosophy as by power.
