Best Time to Visit Vietnam and Thailand: A Luxury Traveler’s Guide
Vietnam and Thailand are two of Southeast Asia’s most captivating destinations. Together, they offer an irresistible blend of vibrant cities, ancient temples, world-class cuisine, tropical beaches, and some of the region’s finest luxury resorts.
Because both countries stretch across different climate zones, there is no single perfect season that suits every destination. However, for most travelers, the best time to visit Vietnam and Thailand is between November and April, when the weather is generally dry, sunny, and ideal for combining both countries in one seamless journey.
November to February: The Classic Season
This is the most popular time to explore Vietnam and Thailand.
Northern Vietnam enjoys cool, comfortable temperatures, perfect for discovering Hanoi, cruising through Ha Long Bay, and wandering the lantern-lit streets of Hoi An. Meanwhile, Thailand’s dry season brings glorious weather to Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Krabi, and Koh Samui.
It’s the ideal season for travelers wanting to experience a little of everything—culture, cuisine, beaches, and outdoor adventures.
Perfect for:
- First-time visitors to Southeast Asia
- Luxury cultural journeys
- Family holidays and multi-generational trips
- Beach and city combinations
- Mekong River cruises and island escapes
March and April: Sunny Days and Tropical Escapes
Spring brings warmer temperatures across both countries, but it remains an excellent time to travel.
Central Vietnam’s beaches around Da Nang and Hoi An enjoy long sunny days, while Thailand’s islands are still blessed with excellent weather before the summer rains begin.
This is one of our favorite times for combining cultural touring with a few relaxing days by the sea.
Ideal for:
- Honeymoons and romantic getaways
- Luxury beach stays
- Food and wellness journeys
- Private yacht charters and island hopping
May to October: The Green Season
The monsoon arrives gradually across much of Southeast Asia, but that doesn’t mean travel should be avoided.
In fact, this can be one of the most rewarding times to visit. Rice terraces in northern Vietnam turn a brilliant green, waterfalls are at their most impressive, and many of Thailand’s luxury resorts offer exceptional value.
Rain showers are often short and followed by clear skies, especially in the mornings.
Why travel during the green season?
- Fewer tourists at major attractions
- Beautiful green landscapes
- Excellent value at luxury hotels
- A more relaxed and authentic atmosphere
- Ideal conditions for photography
It’s also worth noting that Koh Samui and Thailand’s Gulf islands often enjoy better weather between July and September, making them a wonderful option for summer travelers.

Our Recommendation
For the perfect balance of weather, sightseeing, and beach time, we recommend November through April.
However, travelers looking for greener landscapes, fewer crowds, and excellent value should consider May, September, and October, when both countries reveal a quieter and equally beautiful side.
Whether you’re exploring Bangkok’s glittering temples, cruising through Ha Long Bay, relaxing on the beaches of Phuket, or enjoying dinner in the lantern-lit streets of Hoi An, Vietnam and Thailand create one of Asia’s most rewarding luxury journeys.
