Hoi An Ancient Town

The best way to experience Hoi An is slowly.

You enter on foot, because the old streets were never made for rushing. Traffic fades almost at once, replaced by the creak of shutters and the soft movement of the Thu Bon River nearby. Mustard-yellow walls line the lanes, worn by rain and time, lanterns hanging overhead even in daylight, waiting for evening to give them a reason to glow.

Once one of Asia’s busiest trading ports, Hoi An still carries that history in its architecture: old merchant houses, riverside temples, and the modest but iconic Japanese Covered Bridge. Mornings belong to the locals, market vendors and fishing boats along the river, while by afternoon tailors work behind open shopfronts, stitching garments with the calm precision the town is known for.

Then evening arrives, and everything changes. Lanterns glow one by one, small boats drift past carrying candles and wishes, and the old town stops feeling like a place to visit and starts feeling like a place to simply be in.

Best for: history lovers, photographers, and slow travelers.

Best time: early morning or late afternoon.

Duration: around 3 hours.

Good to know: wear comfortable shoes, and cover shoulders and knees when entering temples.
