Where to Go in May in Vietnam

May is a rewarding time to visit Vietnam, with warm weather, lush landscapes and a wonderful mix of culture, beaches and nature. While temperatures begin to rise, a well-paced private journey allows plenty of time to enjoy the country comfortably.

Central Vietnam: Beach Days & Historic Towns

Central Vietnam is an excellent choice in May. Hoi An, Da Nang and Hue enjoy plenty of sunshine, making this a lovely time for a coastal escape.

Spend time relaxing on the beach, exploring Hoi An’s ancient streets and lively food scene, or discovering Hue’s Imperial Citadel and royal tombs. Early mornings and late afternoons are particularly pleasant for sightseeing, while the middle of the day can be enjoyed by the pool or at a local café.

Northern Vietnam: Mountains, Rice Fields & Bay Cruising

May brings rich green scenery to Northern Vietnam. Sapa and Ha Giang begin to look especially beautiful, with rice fields, mountain valleys and colourful local communities.

Hanoi and Ninh Binh remain enjoyable for cultural sightseeing and peaceful boat journeys, while Halong Bay and Lan Ha Bay offer warm conditions for overnight cruises, kayaking and relaxing on deck.

Southern Vietnam: Green Season & Relaxed River Life

May marks the beginning of the green season in Southern Vietnam. Rain showers are usually brief and often arrive later in the day, leaving plenty of time for sightseeing.

Ho Chi Minh City is vibrant year-round, while the Mekong Delta becomes beautifully green and full of local life. Phu Quoc is quieter in May, offering excellent value for travellers who enjoy peaceful resorts and do not mind the occasional shower.
